Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wing Chun?

Wing Chun Kung Fu is fighting system characterised by short-range, explosive techniques. It uses simultaneous defense and attack principles, and favours efficiency of movement and sensitivity to the moves of the opponent over strength.

It is a simple system, containing few forms compared to other martial arts styles, allowing the student to pick up the necessary techniques for self-defence in the minimum amount of time. Partner training is used extensively to build reflexes, speed of movement and to train in a realistic manner.

More information on the Wing Chun can be found at the Wikipedia article on Wing Chun.

Do you have beginners' classes?

Classes are all mixed ability, so there are no pure beginners' classes, however beginners are always welcome. Where there are only a few students who are total beginners or relative newcomers, they are paired with experienced students to cover fundamentals, so that they can learn at a more suitable pace. If there are many newcomers, the entire class starts with fundamentals or more simple drills / applications, and the more advanced students may be shown how to progress the aspects of the lesson, so that everyone gets the most they can out of the class. This arrangement results in newer students benefitting from the experience of the older students, and progressing more quickly as a result. The older students are always happy to teach new students.

Classes are also "split" sometimes, to form a beginners group, and an intermediate / advanced group. This depends on space, the content of that evening's class, and the students in attendance.

Do I have to book in advance?

No, just turn up and introduce yourself.

Can I come along and just watch a class?

You're welcome to come along and watch if you want, though you're better off taking part in the classes so you can feel for yourself if they're what you're looking for, instead of having to guess by watching.

What should I wear to class?

Loose, comfortable clothing is a must. Modern sports / gym wear would be appropriate.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

For Wing Chun, no equipment is required.

For the Filipino arts, nothing is required initially, however you will eventually want to buy you own sticks etc. to use.

Are gradings / belts available?

Yes. Our Wing Chun organisation uses sashes instead of belts, but the idea is the same.
